Ah Yan, whose real name is Ye Xinhong, was born in Kaohsiung in 1976 and graduated from the Chinese Painting Group of the Department of Fine Arts of the National Taiwan University of Arts. The name "A-ya" is taken from the Japanese word "あえ", which means "that", echoing the vague, ambiguous, and indefinable existence in his creations. The style of the work combines traditional ink painting training with childhood love for animation, robots and toys, and is deeply inspired by the emotional tension of the Austrian expressionist painter Egon Schiele, showing a strong formative language and psychological depth.
These strange creatures have gradually become the core characters of his creations, not only as an outlet for emotions, but also as a symbol of reinterpretation and questioning of "ugliness" and "strangeness", allowing these marginal images to stand on the mainstream track, challenging the boundaries of visual aesthetics and breaking the established value opposition.
